There are many different causes of childhood obesity, but one of the biggest is the poor food choice in school cafeterias. Public school food distributors provide schools with burgers, pizza, nachos, and french fries. These poor choices of food give students an unhealthy meal during the middle of their school day and can even affect their learning ability. Schools should care about the well-being of their students and get them healthier food. Surveys found that nine out of ten schools have junk food that competes with nutritional choices. Many experts believe that giving kids healthier options should be a nation-wide requirement. The presence of junk food in elementary schools, middle schools, as well as high schools just adds to the epidemic of childhood obesity in our country.
Many schools are taking initiative to change their ways in order to provide a healthier cafeteria for their students. Programs like the “Farm to School lunch program” allow schools to get their food directly from nearby farms, saving money and having greener food. When kids eat nothing but junk food when they’re younger they are more likely to continue this trend as adults too. By exposing them to healthier food choices when they are in school we are setting them up to also eat healthier as adults.
The issue of child obesity has also now turned into a national security crisis, with many children being so overweight from eating junk food at lunch that they cannot handle the physical requirements of being in the military. Weight problems have become the leading medical reason why recruits are being rejected. After World War II congress passed a health program to help troops with malnutrition grow up healthier and get the nutrients they needed. To ensure the continued safety of our nation a similar bill is needed now.

Get off the Couch

Childhood obesityThe reason we choose childhood obesity as our topic because it is becoming a major problem in the United States in the past decade. Today, nearly 25 million children are overweight or obese. In recent decades obesity rates have risen in ages 6-11. In recent years type 2 diabetes is being seen in children once only seen in elderly adults. Experts predict that if we don’t help or solve the problem of childhood obesity that we will be the first generation in American History to live shorter lives than our parents.Fast food companies have become one of the main causes for obesity among children and teens. The average teen eats fast food about twice a week, while another study reveals that only 3 of 10 high school seniors eat fruits or vegetables daily. Just based on these studies it is easy to conclude that our generation is not eating healthy. Another factor in obesity is the activity level of children. Study reveals that only one of four children participate in free-time activities. Many elementary schools across the nation do not have physical education classes year round. Also less about a quarter of high school students takes physical education year round. And when kids are done with school most are sitting at home playing videos games and not being active. A typical kid in the U.S. approximately spends around four to five hours a day behind the a computer, watching T.V., or playing video games. These technological devices are the reasons why kids are overweight and lazy.Another issue with childhood obesity is that to treat an obese child it cost times as much of a normal weight children in the healthcare system. Also it costs more ib healthcare than smokers.

Okay, Okay

When picking this topic for our project I knew that childhood obesity was an issue in our nation but not until doing some research and reading a few articles did I realize the magnitude of the issue. Experts say that nearly one-third of American Children are either obese or overweight, nearly triple the number of obese children 30 years ago. Many obese children are ignorant to the serious effects of being overweight because it doesn't presently effect them. If they remain this way and don't act on changing to a healthier lifestyle, then serious diseases such as diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure can cripple them in adulthood and in serious cases even in late childhood. Children and adults who are obese were found to have a life-span five years shorter than that of a healthy individual. The problem of childhood obesity is finally beginning to be brought into the light especially thanks to President Obama's wife, Michelle, who has dedicated herself to creating a healthier generation of children and in turn leading to a healthier overall nation. With America spending nearly $150 billion a year treating obesity related health cases, the problem of obesity is effecting everyone paying their taxes as well. The problem of obesity will not be solved overnight but with Michelle Obama leading the way America will soon find itself moving back towards being a healthy nation.
